Outer Banks Airports: Every Public-Use Airfield

Regional airfields for fuel, parking, or commercial connections.

Airport closure — Billy Mitchell (KHSE), from August 17, 2026. Billy Mitchell Airport on Hatteras Island is closed from August 17, 2026 until roughly mid-November 2026 for runway resurfacing. Plan Hatteras Island arrivals around First Flight (FFA) or Ocracoke Island (W95) during that window. Source: National Park Service, Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Always check current NOTAMs.

Flying commercial? None of these airfields take airline service — the nearest commercial airport is Norfolk International (ORF). See the closest airport to the Outer Banks for drive times and 4WD rentals at ORF. This page is for pilots flying themselves in.

Which Outer Banks airport should you fly into?

If your destination is the central Outer Banks — Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, or the Wright Brothers National Memorial — First Flight Airport (KFFA) puts you within walking distance of the Memorial and a short drive to the beach. There is no fuel on the field, so plan to top off at Dare County Regional (KMQI) in Manteo before arriving. KMQI is the closest fuel stop and is just 6 nautical miles south of First Flight.

Pilots who need fuel, a long lit runway, or jet capability should consider Currituck County Regional Airport (KONX) on the Currituck mainland: 5,500 ft with a full-service FBO. There is no bridge from Maple to the Currituck beaches, so by road KFFA is closer to Duck and Corolla than KONX is. For Hatteras Island, Billy Mitchell Airstrip (KHSE) at Frisco is the closest field to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. For Ocracoke Island, Ocracoke Island Airport (W95) is the only way to skip the ferry.

Traveling commercial instead? Norfolk International (ORF) is the closest airline hub, about two to two and a half hours from the northern beaches by car — reserve a 4x4 for the drive from ORF before you land.

Quick comparison

  • KFFA — Kill Devil Hills, 3,000 ft asphalt, no fuel, adjacent to Wright Brothers Memorial.
  • KMQI — Manteo, 4,300 ft runway, 100LL & Jet A available, the area fuel stop.
  • KONX — Maple (Currituck mainland), 5,500 ft lit runway, FBO, fuel — best for jets and fuel stops.
  • KHSE — Frisco, Hatteras Island, 3,000 ft runway, no fuel, closest to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
  • W95 — Ocracoke Island, 3,000 ft runway, no fuel, only fly-in option to skip the ferry.

For an expanded breakdown of runway lengths, services, and tips, see the sections below and the official FAA Digital–Airport Facility Directory for the latest charted details.

Weather and Wind

The Outer Banks is a narrow barrier-island chain. Winds are typically stronger and more consistent than on the mainland — the same conditions that drew the Wright Brothers in 1900. Pilots should check METARs at MQI for the most reliable Outer Banks weather data, as the other airfields are uncontrolled and may not have real-time observations.

Hours and Restrictions

KFFA is daytime use only — no runway lighting. The other OBX airfields generally have runway lighting but check the latest A/FD or chart supplement for current information before flying. Only Dare County Regional (KMQI) has a control tower, and only seasonally in summer on 118.55; everywhere else — and at KMQI outside tower hours — operations are on CTAF or UNICOM.
