This is the short list of Outer Banks pilot resources we actually use ourselves — the official aeronautical sources for flying into KFFA, the NPS pages for visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and the local links that fill the gaps in between. Whether you’re a pilot planning the approach into First Flight Airport or a visitor figuring out how to spend a day on the dunes, the links below all go to primary sources so you’re getting current, authoritative information rather than a copy of it.

Outer Banks pilot resources — official aeronautical info
Start with the FAA and weather sources before every flight. KFFA itself has no on-field weather reporting, so KMQI is the standard substitute.
- FAA Digital Chart Supplement — official airport facility data for KFFA, KMQI, KONX, KHSE, W95.
- aviationweather.gov — METAR/TAF (use KMQI as the nearest reporting station for KFFA), winds aloft, AIRMETs, SIGMETs.
- FAA NOTAM Search — always check KFFA NOTAMs; deer-on-runway and parking-area closures are common.
- SkyVector — KFFA — free aeronautical charts and flight planning.
- AirNav — KFFA — runway, frequency, and ownership details.
- AOPA Airport Directory — KFFA — pilot reports, photos, services.
- ForeFlight — the EFB most OBX-bound GA pilots use; KFFA is fully charted.
Wright Brothers National Memorial
The memorial sits adjacent to the airport, so most pilots will visit at least once. Hours and fees change seasonally — verify before your trip.
- NPS — Wright Brothers National Memorial — hours, fees, programs, and current alerts.
- Memorial hours & fees — useful to check before you fly in.
- First Flight history at the NPS — the official story of December 17, 1903.
Other Outer Banks airports
If KFFA isn’t right for your mission (no fuel, short runway, daytime VFR only), one of these usually is.
- Dare County Regional (KMQI) — Manteo, 4,300 ft, fuel available, our recommended fuel stop.
- Currituck County Regional (KONX) — Maple, 5,500 ft, FBO, best for northern OBX.
- Billy Mitchell Airstrip (KHSE) — Frisco, Hatteras Island, closest to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
- Ocracoke Island Airport (W95) — only way to skip the ferry to Ocracoke.
Local OBX visitor resources
Once you’re on the ground, these are the sources locals use for weather, beaches, and events.
- Outer Banks Visitors Bureau — events, dining, lodging across the OBX.
- Cape Hatteras National Seashore — beaches, lighthouses, and access info.
- NWS Newport/Morehead City — local marine and surface forecasts.
- NOAA tides — Duck, NC — useful for beach planning.
Driving and getting around the Outer Banks
First Flight Airport has no rental cars on-field. Plan ground transport before you arrive.
- Ground transportation from KFFA — 4×4 delivery, rideshare, taxis, and rental options after you land.
- NCDOT Ferry Division — Hatteras–Ocracoke and Cedar Island/Swan Quarter schedules.
