Ground Transportation & 4×4 Rentals
Why Rent a 4WD? The Outer Banks is famous for remote beaches that require 4×4 access. Renting a 4WD allows you to venture beyond the main tourist areas.

Getting around the Outer Banks after you land
First Flight Airport (KFFA) does not have an on-field rental counter or staffed FBO, so pilots flying in for the day or weekend need to plan ground transportation in advance. The good news: KFFA sits inside Wright Brothers National Memorial, which is walkable from the tie-down area. For everything else — restaurants, the beach, lodging — you’ll need wheels.
Rideshare and taxis
Uber and Lyft both operate on the Outer Banks, though driver availability is much better in peak season (May through October) than in winter. Expect a 5–10 minute wait in summer and 20+ minutes in the off-season. Several local taxi services serve Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head and can usually be at the airport within 15 minutes with a phone call.
Rental cars and 4×4 delivery
Traditional rental car branches are located at Dare County Regional Airport (KMQI) in Manteo, about a 15-minute drive south. Some outfitters will deliver a rental — including a 4×4 if you’re heading to the Corolla beaches or Cape Hatteras — directly to the KFFA tie-down area for an extra fee. Booking 2–3 days ahead is strongly recommended in season.
Bicycles and walking
If you’re only staying a few hours, walking covers the Memorial, the 1903 Flyer reproduction hangar, and Kill Devil Hill. A multi-use path runs along US 158 for cyclists. For a longer stay, see our Visiting First Flight Airport guide.
