Visiting First Flight Airport — What to Do at KFFA

Sculpture of the First Flight at Wright Brothers National Memorial

Most general aviation airports are stops on the way to somewhere else. First Flight Airport (KFFA) is the destination. This page covers what to do when you arrive, how to walk to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, what’s nearby for food and beach access, and how to get around the Outer Banks once you’ve parked your plane.

Walk to the Wright Brothers National Memorial

The single best thing to do after landing at KFFA is walk to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. The Visitor Center is roughly a 10-minute walk from the airport tie-down area. Inside, you’ll find a full-scale reproduction of the 1903 Wright Flyer, exhibits on the brothers’ four years at Kill Devil Hills, and a recreation of their 1903 camp. Outside, marker stones trace the exact takeoff and landing points of the four flights. Walking the path of those 12-second and 59-second flights, knowing your aircraft is parked steps away on the same dunes, is unlike any other aviation experience.

Climb Kill Devil Hill

The 60-foot granite Wright Brothers Monument stands atop Kill Devil Hill, the 90-foot dune from which the brothers launched their gliders in 1900, 1901, and 1902. A paved path leads to the top. From the summit you can see the runway of First Flight Airport, the Atlantic Ocean, and Roanoke Sound — and you can appreciate just how much wind the brothers had to work with.

Beach Access

The Atlantic beaches of Kill Devil Hills are about a 15-minute walk east of the airport. The closest public beach access points are along Ocean Bay Boulevard. If you want to drive on the beach with a 4×4, see the section below on ground transportation.

Food and Drink Near the Airport

There is no on-airport restaurant or vending. The closest options are along US-158 (the Bypass) within a 5–10 minute drive: chain restaurants, local seafood spots, brewpubs, and grocery stores. Iconic Outer Banks names like Avalon Pier, Awful Arthur’s, and the original Brew Thru are all within a short drive of the airport.

Ground Transportation

KFFA has no on-field car rental, taxi stand, or rideshare desk. Options include:

  • 4×4 delivery: A 4-wheel-drive vehicle can be delivered directly to the airport so you can explore the Outer Banks and drive on the beach. See our Ground Transportation page for details.
  • Rideshare: Uber and Lyft operate in the OBX but coverage and wait times vary.
  • Rental cars: The nearest rental agencies are at Dare County Regional (KMQI) in Manteo.

Overnight Stays

Tie-downs at KFFA have a 24-hour limit; bring your own ropes. For overnight lodging, Kill Devil Hills and the surrounding towns of Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, and Manteo have hundreds of hotels, motels, vacation rentals, and inns. The closest options are within a 5-minute drive of the airport.

Best Time to Fly In

December 17 — the anniversary of the first flight — is observed at the memorial each year. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather and fewest crowds. Summer brings the warmest Atlantic water but also the most tourists and the highest density of sightseeing aircraft in the area. Winter can be windy and beautiful, but pilots should check forecasts carefully — the same winds that powered the first flight can ground a Cessna 172.

What to do with your time on the ground

One of KFFA’s best features is the flexibility: you can fly in for a quick coffee-and-photo stop, an afternoon visit to the Memorial, or use it as a base for a multi-day Outer Banks trip. Here’s how we’d recommend spending the time.

If you have 2 hours

Walk from the tie-down area to the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center (about 10 minutes), see the 1903 Flyer reproduction in the flight room, then walk the four markers across the field that show the distance of each of the four flights on December 17, 1903. Climb Kill Devil Hill for the photo op at the granite monument. Head back to your aircraft. This is the classic “fly in, touch history, fly home” stop and you can comfortably do it in under two hours, including pre-flight.

If you have a half day

Do the full Memorial visit (allow 90 minutes including the ranger talk if one is scheduled), then arrange a rideshare or rental delivery to the beach. The Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills is a 6-minute drive and a classic OBX stop for lunch. Grab a sandwich, walk the pier, and head back to the airport for an afternoon departure. Total ground time: roughly 3–4 hours.

If you have a full day

Add the Bodie Island Lighthouse (about a 30-minute drive south) or the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. Both are easy half-day additions. If you’re a serious aviation buff, the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach is roughly an hour north and well worth the detour. Plan to depart KFFA before sunset since the field is daytime only.

If you’re staying overnight

You can’t overnight at the airport, so plan to head to a hotel or rental in Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, or Manteo. Drop bags, grab dinner, and then you have a full day or more for the beach, the lighthouses (Bodie, Currituck, Cape Hatteras), the wild horses of Corolla, or fishing. The OBX is most rewarding with at least two nights — fly-in pilots routinely turn a quick stop into a long weekend.

Dining and coffee within reach of KFFA

There is no food at the airport itself. The closest options are a short drive (or a long walk) away. None of these are within strict walking distance from the tie-downs, but a 5–10 minute rideshare or rental gets you to any of them.

  • Stack ’em High Pancakes & So Forth — classic OBX breakfast spot on the Bypass, ~5 min drive. A pilot favorite for early arrivals.
  • Tale of the Whale — sit-down lunch and dinner with sound views in Nags Head, ~10 min drive.
  • Outer Banks Brewing Station — local brewpub in Kill Devil Hills, ~7 min drive. Good for lunch.
  • Front Porch Cafe — local coffee roaster, multiple OBX locations including Kill Devil Hills, ~5 min drive.
  • Tortugas’ Lie — beach shack vibe, lunch and dinner, ~10 min drive.

Best time of year to visit

Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the best times to fly into KFFA. Temperatures are mild, crowds are smaller than mid-summer, and weather is typically more cooperative for GA flying. Summer brings strong sea breezes, occasional thunderstorms, and packed Memorial parking. Winter is quieter but the daytime-only operations window is short, and cold-front passages can bring gusty winds. December 17 — the anniversary of the first flight — is a notable day for fly-ins despite the season.

Half-day road trip ideas from KFFA

If you have a rental or rideshare for the afternoon, three short trips work well as half-day add-ons from First Flight Airport:

  • Bodie Island Lighthouse — 30-minute drive south. Walk the boardwalks, climb the tower in season, and stop at the marshes around Oregon Inlet.
  • Roanoke Island and the North Carolina Aquarium — 25-minute drive southwest via the Washington Baum Bridge. The aquarium is small but excellent for families.
  • Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Corolla wild horses — 45 minutes north. The red-brick lighthouse plus a 4×4 tour of the northern beaches makes a memorable afternoon.
